Foundation:

Mitsubishi's origins trace back to 1870 when founder Yataro Iwasaki established a shipping company that would evolve into the Mitsubishi conglomerate. Mitsubishi's automobile division was founded in 1917 and the first mass-produced Mitsubishi vehicle was the Mitsubishi Model A in 1917.

After WWII, Mitsubishi resumed auto production with the Mitsubishi Jeep as one of Japan's first 4x4 vehicles. Cost-effective yet reliable models like the Galant and Lancer established Mitsubishi in export markets through the 1960s and 70s.

Key Mitsubishi innovations over the decades include early MPV models like the Space Wagon, along with off-road vehicles like the Montero SUV and the Pajero rally racer. The i-MiEV launched in 2009 was one of the world's first modern electric cars.

 

Current Position:

In recent years, Mitsubishi has faced struggles and declining sales. The company is focusing on SUVs, hybrid models, and key growth regions like Southeast Asia. Mitsubishi formed an alliance with Nissan and Renault for shared platforms and cost efficiencies.

As of 2022, Mitsubishi Motors remains one of the constituents of the vast Mitsubishi group. The automaker recorded revenues of around 1.8 billion USD in 2021, down from the previous years.
