This week’s Urban Valor episode features Marine veteran Nivardo Gonzalez. Nivardo grew up in Long Beach, CA. He wasn’t interested in college, so he enlisted in the Marine Corp as an Infantry Rifleman. Nivardo conducted two combat deployments during his enlistment. During one of those deployments, he and his unit were met with intense combat after occupying a Taliban stronghold known as the “Green House.” Nivardo leaves us with how his experience in the military changed his life and what he’s doing to keep a healthy mental state of mind. ???? Hello Nivardo. Peter Martuneac, whom you referenced at 34:30, is one of my sons. He sent me the link to your interview here. I appreciate the first-hand perspectives you spoke of from the deployment you shared with Peter in 2011. Good to hear you're involved as a vet helping vets.

This has been one of your best ones yet. They are all great, but this one got me more because I, too, was born in L.A. and raised in Long Beach, father from Mexico, mom from L.A., enlisted in the Coprs at 17 and boot camp at 18. Served during Desert Shield/Desert Storm.

Wow, These people are amazing. war is the last place I would ever want to go to, but these brave Humans go where bullets are flying and just think, Fire Superiority. True Warriors. This guy really has it together to realize PTSD can kill too and is conquering a new enemy. You brother are a HERO!

Nivardo, a powerful story you delivered, brother. Therapy has many forms. Do formal therapy and do activities that produce therapeutic results. Rock climbing, biking, working out, meditation, reading, volunteer work, martial arts, surround yourself with positive energy and work on removing yourself from unhealthy environments. We have all been around chaos; when we move away from it, it helps. Stay strong and grow stronger with each passing day brother

I’ve listened to many of your podcasts/interviews and this one was one of my favorites. I’m a MoM (Mom of a Marine) and so interested in the ‘transition back home’ period for all you brave men and women. I pray it gets easier and our military does more about it.
